    What is pipeline management?

Pipeline management is the routine of tracking active deals, next steps, owners, values, and expected close dates. It shows where each opportunity stands and which deals need a decision or follow-up.

    What a sales pipeline is

A sales pipeline is a picture of where each live deal sits. Every deal is at a stage, like Qualified, Proposal, Negotiation, or Closed Won or Lost. When a deal moves to the next stage, real work has happened. Maybe you finished a call, sent a proposal, or signed a contract.

What pipeline management looks like day to day

Pipeline management is the habits and tools that keep your pipeline right and ready to act on:

    • Adding a new deal when a real chance shows up
    • Moving deals ahead as they make progress
    • Spotting stuck deals and choosing to push them or drop them
    • Forecasting: estimating which deals may close and when, using stage, evidence, and past conversion data
    • Cleaning up: dropping deals going nowhere, so the pipeline stays useful

The difference between a lead and a deal

A lead is a person or company that may be a fit. A deal is a qualified sales opportunity with an owner, stage, expected value, next step, and target close date.

Keeping leads separate from deals protects the forecast from early interest that has not become a qualified opportunity. Lumenbase handles that work in its Lead Development stage.

    Common pipeline management mistakes

    • Mixing new leads in with deals you expect to close. This makes your forecast less accurate.
    • Leaving stuck deals in the pipeline. A pipeline full of old deals can fool you.
    • Moving a deal to a new stage but not writing down why.
    • Having too many stages. 5 to 7 is enough for most sales teams.
    • No owner on a deal. If no one owns it, no one acts on it.

    How Lumenbase handles pipeline management

Lumenbase splits your work into Lists, Lead Development, Deals, and Accounts. Lead Development comes before your deal pipeline. That way, early chances don't crowd out the deals you're counting on. Deals come with board and list views, your own stages, a deal value, a close date, and an owner. Lumo points out stuck deals and tells you what to do next, all on its own.
